RV Parks in Alaska

The Alaska Highway is the long way in, and that's the point. The road runs through boreal forest for days, past the wall of the Alaska Range, along rivers that still run the color of glacier melt. RVers who'd rather skip some of the driving load their rigs onto the Alaska Marine Highway and ride the Inside Passage north instead. Either way, the scale of the place forces real planning, and pays it back with wildlife on the shoulder and country the Lower 48 simply doesn't have.

Where you park depends on which Alaska you want. Southcentral (Anchorage, Seward, and Homer along Cook Inlet and the Gulf of Alaska), packs full-service RV parks and public campgrounds within reach of glaciers and salmon water. The Interior, centered on Fairbanks, is the jumping-off point for Denali National Park, midnight sun in July, and aurora once the nights turn dark again. The Kenai Peninsula alone runs the full range, from harbor-side parks thick with fishing boats to quiet state park loops in the trees.

An Alaska RV trip asks more of you than a weekend at a hookup site. Rain gear earns its keep even in August, cell bars vanish between towns, and self-sufficiency stops being a slogan and becomes the daily routine. The trade is a route through temperate rainforest, subarctic tundra, and everything between, thousands of miles where the drive itself is half the reason you came.
