RV Parks in Maine

Maine earns its reputation the hard way: granite coastline, spruce forest that runs to the horizon, and towns where the lobster boat still sets the morning schedule. For RVers the range is wide. Southern Maine has actual sand beaches; Mount Desert Island has the cliffs and carriage roads of Acadia National Park; the Midcoast strings together lighthouses and lobster shacks. Push inland and the state opens up entirely, the North Woods and the Lakes Region around Moosehead Lake offer camping a long way from anything resembling a city.

The camping infrastructure is stronger than the wilderness reputation might suggest, especially along the coast and around the tourist towns. Private parks run from basic water-and-electric sites to full-service resorts with sewer at every pad, and most handle a range of rig sizes. Maine's state park system adds a second tier of options, wilder settings, simpler amenities. The one non-negotiable is planning: in summer and during foliage season, the parks around Bar Harbor and Kennebunkport fill up fast, and the best sites go to whoever booked first.

The driving itself is half the trip. Route 1 threads the coastal towns together, serving up harbor views and easy stops, and an RV lets you sample the whole run: Portland's food and arts scene, Bath's shipbuilding history, sunrise from Cadillac Mountain if you're up before the light. Turn inland and the scenic byways trade ocean for lake country: fishing water, hiking trails, moose crossings, and paddling that rewards an early start. Few states let one rig cover this much ground this well.
