About Minnesota

The 'Land of 10,000 Lakes' undersells it, water defines nearly every Minnesota camping trip, and the variety runs deeper than the slogan. Lake Superior's North Shore climbs out of Duluth in cliffs and river gorges; the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness sprawls across the border country; Mille Lacs Lake draws anglers by the thousand; and Itasca State Park holds the modest stream that becomes the Mississippi River. RV parks sit within reach of all of it, along with the Iron Range's old mining towns for campers who like their history with their scenery.

The parks themselves cover the whole spectrum, from rustic state park loops to full-service resorts. A striking number sit directly on lakeshore: dock out front, boat ramp down the road, swimming beach for the kids. Others cluster near towns like Brainerd, a family-vacation fixture, or along the St. Croix River's run of small river communities. Whatever the ratio of solitude to amenities you're after, some corner of the state's lake country matches it.

The trip doesn't have to be all woods and water. Minneapolis and Saint Paul put serious museums, restaurants, and live music within day-trip range of several parks, and the drive between destinations tells its own story, farm country across the south, open prairie sweeping west. A Minnesota RV itinerary can move through half a dozen distinct landscapes without ever crossing a state line.

The calendar matters here more than in most states. Summer is the headline act: full parks, warm lakes, reservations required. Spring and fall are the insider's seasons: wildflowers and early fishing on one end, blazing hardwood color on the other, both with campgrounds half-empty. And winter, for the small tribe of campers equipped for it, opens a different Minnesota entirely: ice fishing, snowmobile trails, and cross-country skiing straight from the site.

  • Minnesota State Park Vehicle Permit

    A vehicle permit is required for entry into all Minnesota State Parks and Recreation Areas. This permit can be purchased for a day or for an entire year. It provides access to all state park facilities and trails.

  • Minnesota Fishing License

    Anyone aged 16 or older must possess a valid Minnesota fishing license to fish in the state's public waters. Licenses vary by residency status and duration. Specific regulations apply to different fish species and bodies of water.

  • Minnesota Watercraft Registration

    All motorized watercraft, and non-motorized watercraft longer than 10 feet, canoes and kayaks included, must be registered with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources if operated on Minnesota waters; only non-motorized craft 10 feet or less are exempt. This applies even if the watercraft is registered in another state, after 90 consecutive days of use within Minnesota.

    Your RV must be properly registered and licensed in your home state or province. Minnesota does not require a separate registration for out-of-state RVs for temporary recreational use, but your home state's plates and registration must be current.

Most run seasonally, roughly May through October, that goes for private parks and state campgrounds alike. A small number stay open through winter, usually serving snowmobilers and ice anglers, but they're the exception. Confirm operating dates with the park directly before planning a cold-season trip.
