About Montana

Montana is the trip most RVers are picturing when they buy the rig. The "Treasure State" runs from the peaks and cold lakes of Glacier National Park in the northwest down to the geothermal country outside Yellowstone in the southwest, with a lot of empty, beautiful road in between. The camping inventory matches the range: full-service private resorts, state parks, national forest campgrounds, and boondocking sites for anyone who'd rather have silence than hookups.

The western half belongs to the Rockies. Going-to-the-Sun Road is the famous drive (check the RV restrictions before you commit), and the hiking, fishing, and wildlife watching around it can fill a summer. Flathead Lake spreads out enough freshwater to feel like a coastline, and the Bitterroot Valley offers the quieter mountain version. RV parks in this half of the state work as basecamps: park once, then day-trip into the mountains and into towns like Kalispell, Missoula, and Bozeman, each with its own character and a good meal at the end of it.

Drive east and the mountains fall away into plains and rolling hills under a sky that earns the license plate. The Missouri River works through this country, carrying good fishing and the Lewis and Clark story with it. Campgrounds out here trade crowds for room: bigger sites, darker nights, and easy access to the state parks and monuments most visitors never reach, Pompeys Pillar among them. It's the opposite of the mountain west, and just as worth the miles.

National park grandeur, a blue-ribbon trout stream, or simply a windshield full of horizon, Montana covers all three. Facilities are kept clean and honest, the scenery does the rest, and the only real cost is planning: peak season here requires it. Do that part right and RVing across this state pays you back at every stop.

Summer, June through August, is when everything is open and warm, and when everyone else is there too. May and September into early October are the insider's answer: fewer people, the same scenery. Winter barely counts; options are very limited.
