Know before you go in Texas
Confirm current requirements with the agency that sets them before your trip. Rules and fees change every season.
Texas Driver's License for Large RVs
Texas requires a specific non-commercial driver's license class (Class A or B) for operating recreational vehicles over certain weight thresholds. An RV with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, or towing a unit over 10,000 pounds with a combined GVWR over 26,001 pounds, may necessitate these specialized licenses. Verify requirements based on the RV's specifications.
Vehicle Inspection
As of January 1, 2025, Texas no longer requires an annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles, including motorhomes. In its place, an inspection program replacement fee is collected at registration, and vehicles registered in certain emissions counties must still pass an annual emissions test. Confirm current requirements with the Texas DPS. Out-of-state RVs are subject to their home state's regulations.
Texas DPSTexas State Parks Pass
While not a mandatory entry requirement, purchasing a Texas State Parks Pass can waive the daily entrance fees for the pass holder and their guests at all Texas State Parks for a full year. This can lead to significant savings for frequent campers and visitors, making it a valuable investment for extended trips.
