About Utah

Red rock in the south, aspen and granite in the north, salt flats and open desert in between, Utah packs more terrain variety per tank of gas than almost any state you can drive an RV through. The "Mighty 5" National Parks (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef), anchor most itineraries, but the state keeps going: the houseboat waters of Lake Powell, the strange briny shoreline of the Great Salt Lake, the slickrock playground around Moab. St. George and the rest of southern Utah stay warm enough that people winter there on purpose, while the Wasatch Front pairs city conveniences with quick escapes into cool canyon country.

Where you park matters as much as where you hike. Resort-style RV parks cluster near the tourist gateways with pools, cable, and long pull-throughs; state park and national forest campgrounds trade amenities for elbow room and quiet. Then there's the public-land option: Utah's enormous spread of BLM and National Forest Service ground makes it one of the best boondocking states in the country, if you can carry your own water and power. Full hookups and big-rig sites exist even in surprisingly remote corners, you just have to look.

The catch is elevation. Utah's climate isn't one climate; it's several stacked on top of each other. Zion and St. George stay mild through winter while campgrounds around Park City and Salt Lake City sit under snow, and many close for the season. Flip that in July: the desert bakes and the mountain campgrounds fill with people fleeing the heat. Pick your month first, then your region, get that order right and the Beehive State will hand you some of the best RV country in America.

  • Non-Resident OHV Permit

    If you plan to operate an Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) in Utah that is registered out of state, you are required to purchase a non-resident OHV permit. This permit helps fund trails and facilities.

    Out-of-state registered boats are permitted in Utah for up to 60 consecutive days. If you plan to use your boat for longer than 60 consecutive days, you must register it with the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles, which processes all vessel registrations and titles (State Parks only enforces boating rules).

  • Campfire Restrictions

    During dry periods, Utah often implements fire restrictions across state and federal lands, including campgrounds. Visitors must check current conditions and obey all posted regulations regarding campfires, charcoal grills, and other ignition sources to prevent wildfires. Restrictions can vary by county and land management agency.

01What is the best time of year to RV in Utah?
Match the season to the elevation. Spring and fall are the sweet spots for the southern national parks, warm days, cold-free nights. Summer belongs to the mountains and the lakes, when the desert gets punishing. Winter splits the state in two: snowbirds settle into southern Utah while skiers park near the northern resorts.
02Are most RV parks in Utah big-rig friendly?
The newer private parks and major state parks generally are, with long pull-throughs and room to swing a 40-footer. Older campgrounds and remote mountain sites are less forgiving: tight loops, short pads, low branches. If your rig is big, confirm site length with the park before you commit.
03Can I boondock or camp for free in Utah?
Yes, Utah is one of the best boondocking states anywhere, thanks to vast Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and National Forest Service holdings open to dispersed camping. You'll get no hookups and no services, so arrive with full water and a plan for waste. Check local rules and fire restrictions first, and leave the site cleaner than you found it.
04What types of hookups are typically available at Utah RV parks?
Private parks mostly run full hookups: electric, water, and sewer at the site. State parks and national forest campgrounds tend toward partial hookups (electric and water) or straight dry camping. Confirm both the hookup type and the amperage when you reserve; assumptions here get expensive.
05Are pets allowed in Utah RV parks and national parks?
RV parks are mostly pet-friendly, with the usual leash rules and designated dog areas. The national parks are stricter: leashed pets are fine in campgrounds, developed areas, and on paved roads and paths, but they're barred from most backcountry trails and buildings. Read each park's rules before planning a hike around the dog.
06How far in advance should I book an RV spot in Utah?
For gateways to Zion or Arches in spring, summer, or fall, think 6-12 months out, those sites genuinely sell out. Quieter corners of the state and off-season dates can come together on a few weeks' notice, but early booking never hurts and often saves the trip.
