About Kansas

Kansas gets written off as windshield country, and that's exactly why the camping here works. The Flint Hills hold the largest surviving stretch of tallgrass prairie on the continent, and waking up in an RV with that grass running to the horizon is a different kind of morning. The big reservoirs (Milford Lake, Wilson Lake, Perry Lake), anchor most of the lakeside parks, and they earn their crowds with real fishing, boating, and swim beaches.

The state changes more than the map suggests. Eastern Kansas has the Glacial Hills (wooded river valleys, actual shade), while the western High Plains trade trees for sky and some of the darkest night skies you'll find east of the Rockies. State parks such as Eisenhower on Melvern Lake and Cedar Bluff out west run developed campsites with water and electric, and plenty of them take a full-size rig without drama.

Then there's the history underfoot. Ruts from the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails still cross this ground, and the small towns strung along the old routes throw festivals for everything from sunflowers to rodeo season. Between state parks, county parks, and private resorts, the options run from bare-bones to full-amenity, pick your speed and let the Sunflower State come to you slowly. It rewards that.
