About Missouri

Missouri sits at the crossroads of American RV travel, and the state rewards anyone who slows down long enough to look. Down south, the Ozarks pile up in wooded ridges cut by spring-fed water; up north, the land flattens into farm country along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. The big lakes (Lake of the Ozarks, Mark Twain Lake, Table Rock Lake), anchor most of the RV traffic, and the parks around them fill with people who came to fish, run a boat, or spend an afternoon swimming off the dock.

What you do depends on where you park. In the Ozarks, state parks and the Mark Twain National Forest put hiking trails, mountain bike routes, and deer at the edge of the campsite. The northern plains run quieter: slower rivers, older towns, history within a short drive. St. Louis and Kansas City sit at either end of the state with RV parks on their outskirts, so a museum day or a ballgame is easy to fold into a camping trip.

The campground inventory covers the whole spectrum: state park loops that take a pop-up, private resorts built for a forty-foot motorhome. A stretch of old Route 66 crosses the state, and plenty of parks sit close enough that the roadside diners and small-town main streets become part of the trip. Missouri maintains its outdoor infrastructure well, whether you want a secluded lakeside pad or a family resort with a full amenity list, the option exists.

  • Missouri State Park Reservations

    Reservations are highly recommended for all Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites campgrounds, especially during peak season and weekends. Sites can be reserved up to 12 months in advance. Campers can make reservations online or by phone. Walk-up sites are available but not guaranteed. Specific rules regarding length of stay, pet policies, and quiet hours apply and are posted at each park.

  • Firewood Regulations

    To prevent the spread of invasive pests and diseases, Missouri State Parks generally prohibit bringing firewood from out of state or from areas known to be infested. Certified heat-treated firewood is usually permitted. It is recommended to buy firewood locally near your camping destination or use certified heat-treated bundles. Check with specific campgrounds for their current firewood policies.

  • Pet Regulations

    Pets are generally welcome in Missouri State Parks and many private RV parks but must be kept on a leash no longer than 10 feet. They are typically not allowed in public buildings, swimming areas, or designated natural areas. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets and ensuring they do not disturb other campers. Always verify specific pet policies with individual RV parks before arrival, as rules can vary.

Yes, most state campgrounds and a large share of private parks take pets. The standard deal is leash on, waste picked up. Some private parks add breed or size restrictions, so confirm the policy with the park before you book rather than at the gate.

05What kind of outdoor activities can I expect while RV camping in Missouri?
Depends where you park. The lakes and rivers (Lake of the Ozarks, the Mississippi), carry the fishing and boating; the Ozarks carry the hiking, biking, and caves; the river towns carry the history. State parks make good first stops because most of it starts at their trailheads.
