About Michigan

Two peninsulas, four Great Lakes, and more freshwater coastline than most RVers will cover in a lifetime, that's the Michigan proposition. The Lower Peninsula alone runs the full range: Detroit and Grand Rapids in the south, resort towns and orchard country up Lake Michigan's west shore, and an interior stitched together with forests, rivers, and thousands of smaller lakes. Campgrounds follow the same spread, from packed family parks with full activity calendars to quiet loops deep in the trees.

Drive north through the Lower Peninsula and the trip earns its reputation. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore rises off Lake Michigan; Traverse City serves its wine and arts scene; and the road eventually dead-ends at the ferry docks for Mackinac Island. Parks along this stretch often sit within walking distance of sand beaches, trailheads, and boat launches on Lakes Michigan and Huron. State parks and forest campgrounds fill out the map, running from rustic to modern and putting campers directly inside the landscapes worth traveling for.

Cross the bridge and the Upper Peninsula changes the rules. The "UP" is big, forested, and unhurried: sandstone cliffs over Lake Superior, waterfalls back in the woods, and long stretches where the traffic is mostly logging trucks and deer. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Tahquamenon Falls State Park, and the Keweenaw Peninsula anchor the itinerary; old mining towns fill in the history between them. RV parks up here run from full-service resorts to bare-bones sites, and either way, solitude comes standard.

Across both peninsulas, the infrastructure holds up. Michigan's mix of private parks and public campgrounds is deep enough to support any itinerary: a weekend on a beach town's edge, a slow month working up the coast, or a full circuit of both peninsulas. Pick coastal energy, deep-woods quiet, or small-town history; the state has a campground pointed at each.

  • Michigan Recreation Passport

    Vehicles entering Michigan State Parks, recreation areas, or state-administered boat launches must display a valid Recreation Passport. This annual pass is available for purchase when renewing vehicle license plates or at park entrances. It covers all occupants in the vehicle and is essential for accessing many public RV camping opportunities.

  • RV Registration and Driver's License

    All RVs must be properly registered with their state of origin and display valid license plates. Drivers must possess a valid driver's license. For larger RVs or those towing heavy trailers, ensure your license class is appropriate for the vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR); verify with your home state's DMV.

  • Firewood Movement Restrictions

    To prevent the spread of invasive insects and diseases, Michigan has strict regulations on moving firewood. It is generally recommended to buy firewood locally at your destination or gather dead and downed wood on-site where permitted, rather than transporting it from distant locations. Verify specific rules with the campground or state agency.

01Are pets allowed in Michigan RV parks and campgrounds?
Almost everywhere, with conditions. State parks allow leashed pets in designated areas and on trails but keep them out of buildings and off swimming beaches. Private parks set their own rules, leash requirements are universal, breed restrictions occasional. Confirm the specifics with your park before arriving.
02Do Michigan RV parks typically offer Wi-Fi service?
It's a coin flip. Many private resorts and some modern state park campgrounds offer Wi-Fi, sometimes for a fee, often with modest bandwidth. Remote and rustic campgrounds frequently have none, or a signal too weak to count on. If connectivity matters for work, verify it with the park directly, not the listing.
03Are dump stations readily available in Michigan?
Yes. Parks with water and electric hookups nearly always have an on-site dump station for guests, and Michigan State Parks with electric sites typically provide central ones. Some highway rest stops and travel centers offer public access as well, occasionally for a fee.
04Can I find long-term or seasonal RV sites in Michigan?
Readily. Many private parks sell seasonal sites covering the whole summer, usually with full hookups, a solid base for exploring one region in depth. The catch is competition: in popular areas, seasonal spots turn over slowly and go fast, so inquire well ahead.
05What is the typical reservation lead time for Michigan RV parks?
For peak season (June-August) and fall-color weekends at state parks or well-regarded private resorts, plan on booking 3-6 months out. Off-peak dates and less-trafficked areas can come together on a few weeks' notice, but booking ahead never costs you anything, and gambling sometimes does.
06Is boondocking or dispersed camping permitted in Michigan?
Yes, and it's one of the state's underrated advantages. Dispersed camping is allowed in much of Michigan's State Forests and some National Forests, and is free, but state forest land requires a free camp registration card posted at your site, and you must camp more than a mile from any state forest campground and follow Leave No Trace principles. Rules on fires, waste, and length of stay still apply; check current guidance with the Michigan DNR or US Forest Service before heading out.
