About New Jersey

New Jersey's camping reputation begins and ends at the beach for most people, which leaves a lot of state unaccounted for. The Appalachian foothills climb across the northwest corner. The Pine Barrens sprawl over the middle in a forest big enough to swallow whole counties. And yes, the Shore is there too, doing what the Shore does. RV parks thread through all of it, close to state parks, Revolutionary-era history, and towns worth an evening walk, good for a quick weekend or a stay that stretches into weeks.

The Shore earns its billing. From Cape May up to Sandy Hook, campgrounds and resorts line the coast, and in Wildwood, Ocean City, and Atlantic City some put you close enough to walk to the boardwalk with sandy feet. But the coast has a second personality: swing over to the Delaware Bay side and the pace drops entirely: birders with scopes, quiet fishing spots, and bayfront sunsets with nobody selling funnel cake anywhere in sight.

Head inland and the state turns green and quiet. The Pine Barrens, a National Reserve, hide state parks and private campgrounds under miles of pitch pine, with cedar-stained rivers that were made for a slow canoe. Northwest, the Skylands deliver actual mountains, lakes like Hopatcong, and sections of the Appalachian Trail, plus summer temperatures a few welcome degrees cooler than the coast.

Then there's the location card, which no other camping state plays quite like this one. Plenty of New Jersey RV parks sit within a reasonable drive of New York City or Philadelphia, meaning you can spend the afternoon in a world-class museum and grill dinner at your campsite the same night. Big-city day trips with a campground to come home to, that's the New Jersey trade, and it's a good one.

01Are most RV parks open year-round in New Jersey?
The typical season runs spring through fall, especially at the coast, where parks live and die by summer. A smaller set, mostly inland parks or those serving longer-term residents, stays open year-round, often with reduced winter services. Check operating dates directly with any park you're counting on off-season.
02Can I find RV parks with full hookups in New Jersey?
Yes: full hookups (water, sewer, electric) are standard at most private parks and available at many state park campgrounds. The rustic end of the state park system leans toward partial hookups or dry camping, so confirm what your specific site includes when booking.
03Are big rigs accommodated in New Jersey RV parks?
Modern parks and resorts generally handle big rigs well, with pull-through sites and decent access roads. Older parks and some state campgrounds are tighter (shorter pads, harder turns), so give the office your length and ask honest questions before you commit.
04How far in advance should I book an RV site in New Jersey?
For the Shore in summer, and holiday weekends anywhere popular: 6 to 12 months out is realistic. Off-peak or inland, a few weeks to a couple of months usually does it, though the best-known spots can still fill without warning.
05Are pets allowed in New Jersey RV parks?
Most parks take pets, nearly all with strings attached: leash rules, waste pickup, and sometimes breed restrictions. Many state parks allow pets in designated areas too. Read the specific park's policy before arrival, it varies more than you'd expect.
06What kind of amenities can I expect at RV parks in New Jersey?
The spread is wide: bare-bones campgrounds with hookups and restrooms at one end, resorts with pools, playgrounds, rec halls, Wi-Fi, and activity calendars at the other. Coastal parks often add beach access or shuttles; state park campgrounds keep it rustic and let the scenery do the work.
