About Illinois

Illinois covers more ground than its flatland reputation suggests. Chicago sits at one end; the Shawnee National Forest's sandstone country fills the other; and the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers cut long, campable corridors between them. RV parks stack up near the marquee state parks (Starved Rock with its canyons and overlooks, Pere Marquette above the river bluffs), while the farm towns of the central prairie offer quieter stopovers for travelers who'd rather skip the tourist circuit entirely.

Up north, Lake Michigan and the Chain O'Lakes make water the main event. RV parks in this corner tend to run modern (full hookups, room for larger rigs, the works), which makes extended stays easy. Galena, tucked into the northwest hills, pairs a well-preserved historic main street with good outdoor country around it, and the Fox River Valley strings together suburbs, river towns, and green space. An RV lets you move between all of it without ever repacking a suitcase.

Southern Illinois, locals call it Little Egypt, barely resembles the prairie upstate. The Shawnee National Forest dominates here: rolling hills, limestone bluffs, and trail systems that go on for days. Camping skews rustic, a mix of electric-only and full-hookup sites in and around the state parks. Garden of the Gods and Burden Falls supply the dramatic scenery, and hikers and photographers tend to leave with more than they planned. Come for the woods; the conveniences are farther between down here, and that's rather the point.

Statewide, the spread runs from private resorts with long amenity lists to public campgrounds run by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. History rides along, too, the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield and Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site near Collinsville both sit within easy reach of campgrounds. Whatever the trip is built around, and whatever the rig, Illinois has a workable answer.

The public ones mostly aren't, state park campgrounds close or cut services once winter sets in.
