About New Hampshire

New Hampshire packs three distinct camping worlds into a state you can drive top to bottom in an afternoon: granite peaks in the north, a lake district in the middle, and a short but genuine stretch of Atlantic coast at the bottom. The RV options track that range, rustic state park campgrounds deep in the forest at one end, full-service private resorts at the other. You can wake up under the Presidential Range, spend the next night watching boats on Lake Winnipesaukee, and still make the seacoast by the weekend.

The White Mountains are the headline act. The Kancamagus Highway alone justifies the trip, and North Conway, Lincoln, and Franconia make natural base towns: gear shops, diners, and trailheads all within a few minutes of camp. Parks in this region see every kind of rig and generally know how to place them, which matters when you're using your site as a launchpad for Flume Gorge, Cannon Mountain, or a stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Then October arrives and the whole region goes up in color; fall here is not a shoulder season, it's a second summer.

Below the notches, the Lakes Region runs on water. Lake Winnipesaukee is the big draw (boating, fishing, swimming off the dock), and towns like Meredith, Wolfeboro, and Laconia surround it with campgrounds, some with their own lake frontage or a marina down the road. Keep heading southeast and you hit the Seacoast: sandy beaches, fried clams, historic Portsmouth, and the boardwalk energy of Hampton Beach. It's a small coastline, but it's a real one, and camping near it feels nothing like camping in the mountains two hours north.

The infrastructure holds up whether you're passing through for a weekend or parking for the season. Serene lakeside loops, busy mountain resorts, quiet corners near covered bridges, the variety means you can match the campground to the trip instead of the other way around. And because the state guards its scenery jealously, an unusual number of parks put you within walking distance of a trailhead, a fishing hole, or an overlook worth the climb.

    All motor vehicles, including RVs, must be properly registered and inspected in their state of domicile. While New Hampshire does not require out-of-state RVs to register in-state for temporary visits, operators must ensure their vehicle meets their home state's legal requirements for highway use.

  • Firewood Movement Restrictions

    To prevent the spread of invasive insects and diseases, New Hampshire has regulations regarding the movement of firewood. It is generally recommended to buy firewood locally near your campsite or use certified heat-treated firewood. Do not transport firewood from outside the state or from distant parts of New Hampshire.

    Proper disposal of greywater and blackwater is mandatory. RV waste must only be discharged at designated dump stations found at RV parks, rest areas, or private facilities. Discharging wastewater onto the ground or into storm drains is illegal and harmful to the environment.

01Are most RV parks in New Hampshire open year-round?
No, the standard season runs May through October. A small number of private parks and some state park campgrounds keep primitive or limited-hookup sites open through winter, mostly near the ski areas and mostly for campers equipped for hard cold. Confirm operating dates directly before counting on any park off-season.
02Can I find big-rig friendly RV parks in the White Mountains?
Yes, plenty of parks in the Whites take big rigs comfortably, with spacious sites and workable access roads. The exceptions are older or more rustic campgrounds where the turns tighten up, so call ahead with your length rather than discovering the problem at the entrance.
03What is the typical lead time for making RV park reservations during peak season?
Long. Summer (June-August) and foliage season (September-October) routinely book popular parks solid months out, and for prime weekends, holidays, or marquee spots in the Lakes Region and White Mountains, 6-12 months ahead is often what it takes.
04Are there options for long-term or seasonal RV stays?
Yes: many private parks sell monthly, seasonal, or full-season sites, and spending the whole summer parked in one spot is a well-established New Hampshire tradition. The catch: seasonal sites often carry waiting lists, so inquire directly and early.
05What should I know about bringing pets to RV parks in New Hampshire?
Most parks welcome pets, with the usual conditions: leashes, designated relief areas, and no leaving animals unattended outside. Some add breed restrictions or caps on how many pets per site. Read the pet policy before you book, not after.
06Are state parks suitable for RV camping, and what amenities do they offer?
Very much so, if you like your camping closer to the woods than the clubhouse. Many New Hampshire State Parks offer electric and water hookups (full sewer is rare, but dump stations cover the gap), plus picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, and showers of varying vintage.
